Interview

David Gomez-Maestre

‘Photography has always been my dad’s hobby. My two brothers, my sister and I had our childhood documented through analog photographs taken by him'. That’s how David Gomez-Maestre, the fashion photographer who draws inspiration from the warm tones of the Spanish town where he was born and bred, got into photography. Let’s find out more about his sources of inspiration and fascination with the art of photography!

How did you get into photography?

Photography has always been my dad’s hobby. My two brothers, my sister and I had our childhood documented through analog photographs taken by him. My parents´ house is full of photo albums. In fact, when going on family trips, my dad would always have his Canon over the shoulder. Probably, my interest came from there.

David, has being from Spain influenced your photographic style?

Yes, of course. I was born and raised in Alicante, the southeast coast of Spain. It’s always summer there, it’s hot and sunny. I guess that's where the warm tones in my pictures come from.

"I like fashion photography as much as the documentary one, especially if I can mix them both."

What’s your fascination with photography about?

The fact that I can create my own world and represent my universe. I like fashion photography as much as the documentary one, especially if I can mix them both.

That being said, what are your main sources of inspiration?

Traveling to different places, getting to know new people and cultures.

You were born in Alicante (Spain), but you live in Los Angeles. Is there anything you miss about your hometown?

I just moved back to Europe, so I don’t miss it anymore. I had been in the States for a long time, but I’m happy that I’m closer to my friends and family now. Living in L.A was a magical experience but, as much as I loved it, it was time to move back home.

What about L.A.? How would you describe it?

Laidback, chill, sunny, palms, road trips, nature, endless adventures and oceans. That would describe it.

Let’s go back to your own work, what’s the photograph you’re mostly attached to?

I actually have a few, not just one. They're the ones that bring me back to the past and make me remember beautiful emotions and memories.

What does the concept of ‘Beauty’ stand for? Is it still relevant?

I think the concept of beauty has definitely changed: it's quite open now and really depends on how you look at it.

In the Instagram era, what defines the boundaries dividing art from non-art?

What’s art? (Laughs, E.D.)

Do you have any tips for those who dream of breaking into fashion photography?

Just follow your dreams and believe in yourself.

A random question: how do you dress for a day at your photography studio?

In my pijamas! (Laughs, E.D.)

Where did you go shopping for clothes in Los Angeles?

Usually, I shop at second hand stores.

One last question: what’s your secret dream?

It's a secret, isn't it? (Laughs, E.D.)
