Interview

Lorenzo De Caro

‘I believe it’s fundamental, mostly for the very young, to read newspapers, because the world isn’t just made of images, but first and foremost of words’. This is one of the many words of advice given by Neapolitan digital talent and newspaper contributor Lorenzo de Caro. Exclusively for this week’s TheCornerZine interview. For those who want to follow in his footsteps keep on reading!

Lorenzo, you were born and grew up in Naples. What do you remember from your childhood?

I have several memories, but I’d say the sea for sure. Naples is a city where it rains 40 days per year, whenever the weather was nice I’d force my babysitter to take me to the beach, that fortunately isn’t far away from my home. I remember with pleasure the time spent in elementary school: some of my classmates are still among my best friends.

Shoes, as I always say, are the only accessory that’s able to give an extra touch to any look.

You studied Communication Sciences at the Suor Orsola Benincasa University of Naples. If you could change anything about the Italian educational system, what would it be?
I’d update the content of university courses, giving more emphasis to the importance of social networks, that proved, and still prove nowadays, their power. For example, in these hard times we’re managing to promote charity initiatives through social networks, reaching unbelievable goals. Everyone should learn how to use them intelligently!

In 2013, you created a very successful blog. What do you think determined its popularity?
I’ve always tried to be the best version of myself, without being unoriginal or conforming to the crowd. My constant search for inspirational content, that’s not just linked to the so-called ‘outfit of the day’, helped me as well.

Among Naples, Milan and London, you travel a lot for work. What do you always bring with you from your hometown?
Freedom and the courage to dare, which are, in my opinion, the main features of my hometown, for better or worse.

Over the years, you’ve collaborated with several magazines and newspapers. Among them all, catching my attention is your collaboration with il Corriere della Sera. How was it born? Do you think this collaboration marked a turning point in your career?
I started out, in 2013, at il Corriere del Mezzogiorno, a local edition of il Corriere della Sera, thanks to which I became a journalist. About three years later, I got to write for Moda Corriere, which I’m still collaborating with today. For sure, the journalistic approach helped me to give a different appeal to what I communicate through social networks and, without any doubt, tell more about myself. I know it’s hard to believe, as I’m very introverted on some levels.

With over 120K followers on Instagram, you have a large following. What’s your relationship with social networks? Have you ever been affected by the pressure of social networks?
No, I don’t think I have. After all, I mainly post inspirational content. Even the social network accounts I follow, aren’t very interactive with their fan base: they’re more of a source of inspiration that helps you understand how to interpret today’s world.

Lorenzo, how would you describe your wardrobe?
Too small, if compared to the amount of garments and accessories I own. By the way, all my clothes are very similar, as I always look for things that can work in any context and occasion. Regarding colours, black and midnight blue are, for me, a true guarantee.

Speaking of your career, what’s the project you always remember with great pleasure? How about a challenge you faced?
In my work, everything’s a challenge, as I always try to give the best of myself. Over the years, there’s been many beautiful projects. That being said, I’m very attached to brands I’ve been working with for some years now, rather than just single collaborations.

Going back to your wardrobe, is there a garment you’re particularly attached to?
Shoes, as I always say, are the only accessory that’s able to give an extra touch to any look. I have so many pairs of shoes and, once again, I pretty much always buy the same style.

Do you think you’re signature look has changed since you started working in the fashion world?
Yes, it’s changed a lot. Well, more than changed, it’s evolved, going hand in hand with my personal and professional growth.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?
To always be true to myself, which is something I’ve been doing since I was a child, although I’m not always good-tempered.

Lorenzo, if you could go back in time, would you do anything differently?
No, not really. Mistakes help you grow and, without making mistakes, I probably wouldn’t have reached the goals I set for myself.

Do you have any suggestions for those who really want to follow in your footsteps?
Don’t let yourself be influenced by anyone, and don’t trust whoever says the world of digital talents will come to an end: if you’re good and know how to get to the heart of the people who follow you, you’ll stay afloat. I think it’s necessary to learn how to create content of quality and not to post just for the sake of it. That being said, I believe it’s fundamental, mostly for the very young, to read newspapers, because the world isn’t just made of images, but first and foremost of words.

Lastly, what’re your dreams for the future? Is there any goal you’d like to reach?
I’m superstitious, I’ll leave this question to the next interviewee!
