Interview

Saturnino

From playing the bass beside Lorenzo ‘Jovanotti’ Cherubini to designing eyeglasses, writing an autobiography and presenting a tv program, the polyhedral musician, producer and composer Saturnino Celani is at his highest level of creativity from when he opens his eyes to when he falls asleep. That’s exactly what he told us in this interview released in the days preceding his exhibition in the city of Magenta, in occasion of the special event organized by TheCorner.com.

Saturnino Celani is the Italian polyhedral musician, producer and composer, who will be performing, as a special guest, at the event organized by TheCorner.com in Magenta.

First things first, when did you realize that you wanted to pursue a career in music?

When, for the first time, I listened to my friends’ group play covers of the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, ACDC and Van Halen’s songs. I immediately thought: ‘I have to play with them!’. After the first public concert, I decided that would be my life!

At 14 years old, you left the violin for the bass. What do you still remember from that period?

I remember it perfectly, as if it were yesterday. I also remember the surgical lucidity with which I made my choice.

That being said, what has been the most important moment in your career so far?

Definitely, meeting Lorenzo, who made me understand how to play and make Music with the most freedom of expression.

How would you describe your stylistic hallmark? As to the musical composition, has your approach changed over the years?

At almost 50 years old, I’m Saturnino, to my friends Satu or Nino. My birth year has become my stylistic hallmark; the more I move forward, the more I follow the sound timbre and search for a note in an ocean of pauses…

Possibly, an unexpected question: what’s the bass you’re mostly attached to among the ones of your collection?

There are two instruments I really care about, well three. One is my first bass, that my mother bought me and, then, I donated to the museum of EKO. The second one is the bass that my father gifted me, whereas the latest addition is the ‘NO-NO’, a bass entirely designed by Fabio Novembre and produced by NOAH GUITARS.

Musician, producer and composer. Today, what’s the role that allows the highest expression of your creativity?

I’m at my highest level of creativity from when I open my eyes to when I fall asleep.

You have over 138K followers on Instagram, a platform of photo and video sharing with which you found, among other things, love. How would you define your relationship with social networks? In the past, have you ever felt the need to take a break from social media?

I adore social networks and I have lots of fun, but I grew up without them and now I have to make up for lost time. On Instagram, I also found a girlfriend, who then mentioned the excessive time spent on there among the reasons why she was dumping me (Smiles, E.D.).

Let’s talk about another grounded and long-lasting relationship, the one with Jovanotti. Besides music, what unites you? What’s the craziest experience you’ve ever lived together?

I consider Lorenzo as the elder brother I’ve never had. We’ve lived many different experiences together. We even came away unhurt from a car accident: maybe, the title of a film about our life would be ‘Fast and Lucky’ (Laughs, E.D.).

Going back to the professional side, in 2014 ‘Saturnino Eyewear’ came to life. Would you talk to us about this exciting adventure in the world of eyewear. What do we have to expect?

The #SaturninoEyewear project was born, because one of the biggest players in this field stopped producing a particular style of glasses. On the advice of an optician, I started designing glasses on my own and, then, I was joined by a fantastic business partner. From a seed, a plant that we’re trying to grow strong and healthy without using ‘financial additives’, contrary to what often happens in this country when you do business, came to life. We’re the ‘X-Factor' of eyewear!

You played roles, wrote an autobiography and presented a tv program. What are the fields in which you’d like to put yourself to the test?

My life path is extraordinary. Anyhow, I’ll tell you at the end.

Despite the great success, do you have any regrets?

I have no time for regrets. That being said, if I keep on waiting, the desire to have children will turn into a regret.

Finally, who or what is the first of your morning thoughts dedicated to?

To the state of health of my parents.
